Approximately one million rural homes and farms across Pennsylvania utilize private wells for drinking water and on lot septic systems for wastewater disposal. The management of these water and wastewater systems is the voluntary responsibility of each homeowner. The Penn State Extension Water Resources Team is presenting a workshop on Home Water and Septic System Management. The two-hour workshop will cover septic system management, causes and solutions for septic system failures, along with water supply location, construction, testing and treatment. Homeowners are also encouraged to bring samples of their drinking water for free on-site testing and interpretation of pH, total dissolved solids and nitrates.
Homeowners should take a new drinking water bottle (commercial variety) pour the water into a glass to drink, rinse the bottle with their tap water 3 times, and cap it. This should be done before coming to the program. If you have questions please contact Andy Yencha at 717-240-6500.
